The Old Stone House is a reconstruction of the Dutch farmstead that stood on this site. The site is famous for the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776, as well as being the birthplace of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The site is part of the National Register of Historic Places and is operated by the Historic House Trust of New York City. The Old Stone House is located on a landmarked parcel of land in Cobble Hill, where it stands today. The house was built in 1780 and first saw its first residents in 1779. A descendant, Nicholas R. Cowenhoven, left the land to his grandson, Jacques. In 1779, Nicholas R. Cowenhoven left the house to Jacques Cortelyou, who bought it for his newly-wed son. Peter’s son Jacques inherited the house in 1815. This was the last family to live in the Old Stone House.
The Old Stone House of the Brooklyn Historical Society has many branches: the main headquarters in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, the museum, and an educational center. There are also locations in DUMBO, which is another area of Brooklyn with a rich history. Admission to the Brooklyn Historical Society is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors, and free for children under twelve.
