Security Door or Roll Down Gate? How to Choose

A steel security door and a roll down gate solve the same problem at different widths: a door protects an entry point you use, a gate protects a storefront-width opening where a fixed door will not work.

When the answer is a door

A steel security door is the right call at cellar entries, service and loading openings, equipment and boiler rooms, and rear doors. What makes it hold is the frame: welded angle or channel set into the opening rather than a bent sheet metal jamb that flexes under a kick. Hinges are selected for the door weight and traffic, with the pins on the secure side so they cannot be driven out from outside. Infill follows the room — expanded metal and welded mesh where you need ventilation, bar and picket where you need sightlines, solid plate for cellar and equipment rooms. Cylinder locks, panic hardware, slide bolts, closers and padlock hasps are installed before delivery instead of drilled on site.

Service and loading openings get double-leaf doors or oversized single leaves built to the same frame standard.

When the answer is a gate

Retail, restaurant and service entrances get a roll down security gate, and the steel around it decides whether it works. Headers, side guides and the bottom bar track are fabricated to the exact opening width and reveal condition. When a gate binds or runs crooked, the cause is usually bent or shifted guides or anchor points that have let go — spalled or cracked masonry gets cut back to sound material and rebuilt with new bearing steel, and guides are straightened or replaced so the curtain runs freely. Slide bolts, cylinder locks and bottom bars are routine service items, and damaged curtain sections can be repaired where the mechanism itself is still sound.

Most buildings use both

A storefront usually ends up with a gate at the front, a security door at the rear or cellar entry, and window guards on the side and rear windows.
