Steel Security Doors

A security door is only as good as its frame and its hinges. Steel Masters builds both - heavy welded frames, continuous or heavy-duty butt hinges, and a leaf in mesh, bar or plate depending on how much you need to see through it.

Doors are fabricated to the measured opening in our Brooklyn shop and hung by our crew, complete with the lock hardware you specify.

Steel security doors take more daily abuse than almost anything else on a building - they get slammed, kicked and forced, every day, on top of whatever a burglar tries. Steel Masters has fabricated mesh, bar and plate security doors for NYC storefronts, apartment buildings, schools and commercial properties since 1972, building the frame and hinges to outlast the leaf.

Why NYC Owners and Managers Choose Steel Masters

  • Heavy welded frames - the frame is welded angle or channel set into the opening, not a bent sheet metal jamb that flexes under a kick.
  • Continuous or heavy butt hinges - hinge selection matches the door weight and traffic, with the pins on the secure side so they cannot be driven out from outside.
  • Mesh, bar or plate leaves - expanded metal and welded mesh for ventilation, bar and picket for sightlines, solid plate for cellar and equipment rooms.
  • Hardware fitted in the shop - cylinder locks, panic hardware, slide bolts, closers and padlock hasps installed before delivery, not drilled on site.
  • Measured to the opening - we field-measure hinge side, swing and threshold condition so the door is sized correctly the first time.
  • Double-leaf and oversized options - service and loading openings get double-leaf doors or oversized single leaves built to the same frame standard.
  • Primed, painted and hung by our crew - finished before delivery and installed by Steel Masters, not a subcontractor unfamiliar with the door.

Door Types We Fabricate

Expanded metal and welded mesh doors suit utility and storage rooms where you want airflow and visibility through the leaf. Bar and picket gate doors work at entries and vestibules where sightlines matter as much as security. Solid plate doors close off cellar, boiler and equipment rooms completely, giving a flat surface for signage and a tighter seal against the opening. Double-leaf and oversized doors cover service and loading openings too wide for a single leaf without over-stressing the hinges.

Frame, Hinge and Hardware Details

The frame carries the door, so it is welded angle or channel set square in the opening and anchored into sound masonry or structural steel, not screwed to trim. Hinge count and gauge are matched to leaf weight, and pins are set on the secured side of the swing.

Locks, panic hardware, slide bolts and closers are specified with you and fitted in the shop, so the door arrives ready to hang and lock rather than drilled and marked up on the street. Welds are ground where they show, and the assembly is primed and painted before it leaves Brooklyn.

Where Security Doors Get Used in NYC

Storefront rear and side entries, apartment building basement and roof doors, boiler and utility room doors, school and commercial equipment rooms, and loading and service openings that need a door heavier than a hollow metal stock unit. Any opening that gets locked and unlocked daily and needs to survive it is a candidate for a shop-built security door.

Every job is measured in the field and built to that opening - we fabricate in our own Brooklyn shop and install with our own crew, the same way we have since 1972.

Frequently Asked Questions

A window guard fixes into a window opening and stays closed. A security door hangs on hinges and has to open, close and lock every day, which is why the frame, hinges and hardware carry more of the load than the leaf itself.
