Fire Egress Stairs
Fire egress stairs are life-safety steel, and they are inspected like it. Steel Masters fabricates exterior egress runs, landings and guard railings to the dimensions and clearances your plans call for, and installs them with our own crew.
We work from your architect's or engineer's drawings, or produce shop drawings in house for approval before any steel is cut.
Fire egress stairs are the exterior steel stairs required as a means of egress on multi-storey NYC buildings - welded steel flights, landings and guard rails sized to a fixed rise, run and clearance rather than built to a general-purpose layout. Steel Masters fabricates new egress stairs and repairs or replaces existing ones for apartment buildings, schools, factories and commercial properties across the city.
Why NYC Owners and Managers Choose Steel Masters
- Built to approved drawings - fabricated from your engineer's or architect's stamped drawings, or from shop drawings we produce for review before cutting steel.
- Welded flights and landings - stringers, landing framing and decking are shop-welded as sections, not assembled from separate pieces on site.
- Guard rails to current height requirements - handrail and guard rail heights are built to the governing code for the run, whether new construction or a replacement on an older stair.
- Connections into sound structure - welded and through-bolted into structural members we inspect before fabrication, not anchored into deteriorated masonry.
- Landing and tread replacement - corroded landings, treads and railings on an existing egress stair are replaced without rebuilding the whole tower.
- Galvanized or exterior-painted finish - hot-dip galvanizing for full exposure, or a primer and exterior topcoat system, protecting welds and cut edges as well as flat steel.
- Fabricated and installed as one job - built in our Brooklyn shop and set by Steel Masters installers, so the crew that measured the job also installs it.
New Egress Stairs and Repairs
New exterior egress towers are built where a building needs an added means of egress, typically a switchback layout to cover multiple floors within a narrow footprint against the building's rear or side wall. On existing stairs, the more common job is targeted repair - replacing a rusted-through landing, a section of stringer, or a guard rail that no longer meets height requirements - without disturbing the rest of the structure.
Working from Drawings
Egress stairs get inspected, so the steel has to match the drawings that were approved for the job. We fabricate directly from your architect's or engineer's plans when they exist, holding the rise, run, landing size and railing height called out on the drawing.
Where no drawing exists yet, we produce shop drawings in house showing the framing and connection details for your engineer or expediter to review and stamp before fabrication starts, so there is no rework after the steel is cut.
Structural Connections and Finish
Egress steel carries emergency loads, so connections are welded and through-bolted into sound structural members rather than surface-anchored into spalled or deteriorated masonry. We check the attachment points on the building before fabrication. Exterior steel is hot-dip galvanized where full weather exposure calls for it, or primed and finished with an exterior paint system, coating welds and cut edges along with the flat surfaces.
Every job is measured in the field and built to that opening - we fabricate in our own Brooklyn shop and install with our own crew, the same way we have since 1972.
