Materials and Fabrication
Exterior catwalks are built from hot-dip galvanized grating and structural steel framing so the finish holds up to weather without a paint schedule. Interior mechanical-room catwalks are usually primed and painted carbon steel, since they aren't exposed to the elements.
Framing is shop-welded into sections sized to fit through roof hatches and freight elevators, then bolted together and to the dunnage on site. Grating is clipped down per panel, not tack-welded, so any section can be removed for equipment work and reinstalled without cutting.
Coordinating with Roof Dunnage and Equipment
Catwalks are usually part of a larger rooftop package - dunnage racks carrying the equipment itself, curbs at penetrations, and the walkway connecting them. We coordinate layout with the mechanical contractor and roofer before fabrication so the dunnage, curbs and catwalk are set at compatible elevations and the roofing crew isn't working around finished steel.
Every job is measured in the field and built to that opening - we fabricate in our own Brooklyn shop and install with our own crew, the same way we have since 1972.
