Outdoor Steel Decks & Stairs

Rear yard decks, entry platforms and the stairs that reach them are one assembly, so we build them that way - framed, decked and railed in the shop, then set and anchored on site.

Grating, diamond plate or wood decking over a welded steel frame, with railings to match the rest of the building.

Outdoor steel decks and stairs are welded steel platforms with a connecting stair built into the same structure, used where a rear yard, roof or entry needs a raised, load-rated surface rather than a stair alone. Steel Masters fabricates deck-and-stair combinations for NYC brownstones, apartment buildings and commercial properties, framed in steel and decked in the material that fits the site.

Why NYC Owners and Managers Choose Steel Masters

  • Deck and stair engineered together - frame, decking and stair are designed as one structure so the stair lands correctly on the deck and shares a continuous railing line.
  • Welded steel frame - posts, beams and joists are shop-welded steel, sized to the span and the loads the deck will carry.
  • Grating, plate or wood decking - steel grating and diamond or checker plate for utility and commercial decks, wood or composite over a steel frame for residential rear yards and roofs.
  • Base plates, not posts in the ground - posts land on steel base plates anchored to a footing or slab, keeping the steel out of standing water and soil contact.
  • Pitched to drain - the frame is set with a slight pitch so water runs off the deck surface instead of pooling against the steel.
  • Matching railings - pipe or picket guard rails and handrails are fabricated to match the building's existing railings or a new specification.
  • Galvanized or painted for exterior exposure - hot-dip galvanizing or a primer and exterior paint system, protecting welds and connections along with the flat steel.

Common Deck-and-Stair Builds

Brownstone rear yard decks with a stair down to grade, entry and stoop platforms with a side stair replacing a failed masonry stoop, roof deck framing built over existing roof structure, and commercial loading or service platforms with an attached access stair. In each case the deck and the stair share the same frame and railing rather than being two separate structures butted together.

Framing and Decking

The steel frame is sized to the span, the decking material and the expected load, then shop-welded into sections sized to move through the site access available. Where the deck sits over an existing roof or floor, we check that structure's capacity before framing and add reinforcement if the added dead and live load calls for it.

Decking is fastened to the frame after the steel is set - grating and plate are bolted or clipped down, wood or composite decking is screwed to steel nailers welded across the joists. The stair ties into the same frame at the landing, so there is no separate connection to align later.

Built for Weather

Everything exposed to the weather is galvanized or finished with an exterior paint system, decks are pitched to drain rather than built dead level, and posts are set on base plates rather than into the slab or ground so water cannot sit at the base of the steel. On roof decks we also confirm the deck framing does not block existing roof drains or scuppers.

Every job is measured in the field and built to that opening - we fabricate in our own Brooklyn shop and install with our own crew, the same way we have since 1972.

Frequently Asked Questions

As one job. The frame, decking and connecting stair are designed and fabricated together so the stair lands correctly on the deck and both share the same railing line, rather than being pieced together from two separate assemblies.
