Roof Ladders with Safety Cages

Once a fixed ladder climb runs high enough, it needs a cage. Steel Masters fabricates caged roof ladders as one welded assembly - side rails, rungs, hoops and vertical straps - so the cage lines up with the climb instead of being clamped on afterwards.

We measure the climb on site, build the ladder and cage to that height in our Brooklyn shop, and install it ourselves with the correct standoff from the wall.

Roof ladders with safety cages give a tall fixed climb the fall protection code requires without turning the roof access into a full staircase project. Steel Masters has been fabricating caged ladder assemblies for NYC rooftops, shafts and mechanical mezzanines since 1972, building the ladder and cage as one welded unit sized to the actual climb.

Why NYC Owners and Managers Choose Steel Masters

  • One welded assembly - rails, rungs, hoops and vertical straps are shop-welded together, so the cage is aligned to the rungs instead of bolted on after the ladder is up.
  • Hoop spacing built to the climb - hoop diameter and vertical spacing are set to the rung layout and wall standoff of the specific installation.
  • Standoff brackets anchored to the structure - brackets hold the rails clear of the wall for hand and foot room, anchored into masonry or welded to steel framing.
  • Top landing extensions - walk-through or parapet extensions built to the height of the actual parapet or curb, so there is something to grab at the top.
  • Rung spacing built to the run - rung spacing and rail height are set from the field-measured climb, not cut down from a stock ladder length.
  • Exterior-rated finish - hot-dip galvanized or primed and painted with an exterior system for rooftop and shaft exposure.
  • Measured, fabricated and installed by one shop - field measurement, Brooklyn fabrication and installation are all handled by Steel Masters crews.

What Comes With a Caged Ladder

Welded hoops and vertical straps sized to the climb height and rung spacing. Wall standoff brackets anchored into masonry or welded to steel framing to hold the rails off the wall. Rung spacing and rail height built to the measured run, not cut down from stock. Walk-through or parapet extensions at the top landing so there is a grab point stepping off the ladder.

Where They Get Installed

Rooftop bulkheads, elevator machine rooms, mechanical mezzanines, shaft climbs, and any exterior wall climb tall enough to need fall protection. We see the most demand on multi-story apartment buildings and commercial roofs where the mechanical penthouse or bulkhead sits well above the last interior stair landing.

Fabrication and Field Fit

We field-measure the wall, the standoff clearance needed, and the height from grade or platform to the top landing before building anything. The ladder and cage are welded as a single unit in our Brooklyn shop, then finished with galvanizing or an exterior paint system before delivery.

On install, our crew sets the standoff brackets into sound masonry or welds them to structural steel, sets the ladder plumb, and builds the top extension to match the parapet or curb it lands on.

Every job is measured in the field and built to that opening - we fabricate in our own Brooklyn shop and install with our own crew, the same way we have since 1972.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most codes call for fall protection once a fixed ladder climb exceeds roughly 20 feet without an intermediate landing. We build to the height of the actual climb and the standard that applies to the building, and can add cages below that height where an owner wants the extra protection anyway.
